inquiry to PS2 Memory Card

I recently ordered a memory card for my PS2 and waited two weeks or so to be able to play my favorite game. I just tried using it and its telling me that there is insufficient space on the memory card, yet when i go to see how much space is free its all empty. Why is this memory card not working.
