Save As
Use the Save As option to copy the open format with a unique name while retaining the original. This option is useful for creating a new format similar to an existing format. Existing data can be changed as required rather than entering all new data.
To copy and save a format with a new name:
1
Open an existing format.
2
Select the Format menu bar heading.
3
Select the Save As menu option. The Format Name dialog box is displayed.
4
Enter the new format name.
5
Select OK to save the format using the new name.
Delete
Use the Delete option to delete a format from the directory in which it resides.
To delete a format:
1
Select the Format menu bar heading.
2
Select the Delete menu heading. The Delete Format(s) dialog box is displayed.
3
Select the format to delete.
4
Select OK. A confirmation message is displayed.
5
Select Yes to delete the format.
Import
Use the Import option to copy a CAD import format from one machine (or offline PC) to another machine. This is useful if a custom format has been created at one machine or PC. The format can then be imported to all machines.
To import a format:
1
Format > Import
The Source Directory dialog box is displayed.
2. Select the drive and directory that contains the CAD import format file.
The CAD import format file must be named APEFORM.DEF in order to be recognized by the import function.
3. From the Files list box, select the APEFORM.DEF file and select OK. The Import Formats dialog box is displayed.
Only formats that were exported are available for import.
4
Select the format(s) to import and select OK. (Hold the [Shift] key to select more than one format.)
5
If a format of the same name already exists, a prompt asks to overwrite the existing format. Select Yes to overwrite or No to cancel the import.
6
A message indicates the format was successfully imported.
Export
Use the Export to copy a CAD import format from one machine, or offline PC, to another machine.
To export a CAD format:
1
Format > Export
The Export Format(s) dialog box is displayed.
2
Select the format(s) to export and select OK. (Hold the [Shift] key to select more than one format.) The Target Directory dialog box is displayed.
3
Select the drive and directory to export the CAD format to and select OK. It is not necessary to name the formats. All the selected formats are exported under the name APEFORM.DEF. Do not change the name of this file.
4
A message indicates the selected format(s) were successfully exported.
Auto Detect
Before a CAD file can be imported, it must have a designated format. This is the only way that the import utility can identify the data elements in the file. The Auto Detect option attempts to detect these elements which include: the number of header lines, the number of data lines, and the number of columns or fields the file contains. If the auto detect is successful, the task of importing the file is a simple one.
CAD data files and bill of materials files can be detected using this procedure.
To auto detect the format of a CAD file:
1
From the CAD Data Import window, select the Format menu bar heading.
2
Select the Auto Detect menu option. The Auto Detect CAD File dialog box is displayed.
3
Select the file to be auto detected from the CAD Files list box.
4
Select OK. If the file is successfully detected, it is displayed in the display area of the window and the fields found are listed in the Field Identification list box.
This Document Supports IM-UPS Version 3.1.x and Above
If the CAD file is in Table format, the columns are displayed in different colors. This is to help easily distinguish one column from the next.
If the auto detect fails, a message box displays the possible reasons for the failure. These reasons may include:
.
inconsistent format
.
miscellaneous data at the end of the file
.
comments following data in the same line (Separator)
.
a header that appears to be valid data
.
blank lines at the end of the file
Modify the CAD file and try the auto detect again.
5
For example, if the first field in the CAD file is the reference ID, select Field 1: IGNORE in the Field Identification list box. Then, double-click on Reference ID in the Field Types list box. Reference ID replaces IGNORE for Field 1.
If a field contains data unrelated to a product, leave IGNORE as the field type.
A bill of materials file only needs to have two fields: Reference ID and Component ID.
6
Repeat step 5 for all fields listed in the Field Identification list box.
7
When all the fields have been identified, either import the file immediately or save the format for future imports.
