An electro-luminescent(EL) lamp is structured with a phosphor layer sandwiched between two electrodes; it functions electrically as a capacitor. When AC voltage is applied across the electrodes, the light generated from the phosphor is radiated through the transparent top electrodes.
EL lamps have extremely low power draw and generate no heat under normal operating conditions.
