Lombok Pottery Centre - Lombok Crafts Project - NZAID
About us | The lombok crafts project has been working with the women potters of lombok since 1988. The aims of the project are to improve the standard of living of women potters and their families in the three project villages through technical, marketing and community development programmes such as literacy, clean water, education, sanitation, health and scholarships. In the first years of the project new zealand technical advisers worked with the potters and local project staff to improve the quality of pottery through clay processing, construction methods, finishing and firing techniques. New market outlets were developed, mainly targeting the local hotel and hospitality trade and handicraft export sectors. Integrated community development programmes were initiated to increase potters participation in managing their own enterprise. Training programmes run by project advisors and outside consultants teach potters and staff the skills required to manage export quality production. The ultimate goal is a self-sustainable organization run by local people, where the potters groups control decision-making and distribution of profits. Up to date lombok pottery centre, the marketing arm of the project, has enjoyed the position as a market leader in exporting high quality pottery overseas with 80% income from export through both local and international buyers. The lombok crafts projects recognizes the importance of its role to influence pottery production for the new markets that are rapidly developing in lombok. One of the project's aims is to foster the continued production of traditional pottery forms and traditional techniques by actively promoting these pots to the market, rather than imitating styles from other cultural traditions. However, without forgetting this important aim, we also tailor our designs to specific market needs and at the same time preserve the unique qualities of sasak earthenware. The lombok crafts project is part of the new zealand ministry of foreign affairs and trade's development cooperation programme in indonesia. This is a bilateral project with the republic of indonesia's department of trade and industry. |
