| About us | HISTORY Millefiori” (meaning housand flowers”) is a thin polychromatique glass cane. It owes its name to the innumerable designs and flowers of its inside. The exact date of origin of Millefiori” glass is unknown; it surely dates back to Alexandrian and Roman ages, as archaeological discoveries give evidence that they knew and use it. Its technique has a period of oblivion and has been then continued in Murano – the island of glass near Venice – in the sixteenth century. It becomes real art only in the nineteenth century, thanks to the glass masters who created murrinas joining several canes. As from that moment and for over a century, all the glass master generations (from the Franchinis till the Baroviers) tested themselves making more and more refined murrinas: they started with easy geometrical designs to get perfect portraits skilfully executed. Millefiori and Murrina technique The Millefiori glass cane is made from a heated soft glass sphere which is pressed into a mould: in such a way it can have a flower or a star shape; afterwards, it can be covered by further glass layers of different colors and can be put again into other moulds to obtain many concentric designs. Finally, the glass sphere is warmed up and pulled at its ends until it becomes a thin glass cane: all along its inside, the designs maintain unchanged their perfection. The Millefiori glass cane is then cut in small pieces which are then set in a mould, following a pre-established design; this composition is heated again: the small pieces merge and become a unique piece, a Murrina. After cooling, grinding and polishing, the Murrina is ready to become an elegant pendant, earrings, a watch or another coloured accessory. Murrina is an ancient handicraft glass jewel; made with many colourful Millefiori pieces, it can be combined with lots of accessories: pendants, watches and several objects which become very exclusive. Now the usage fo MURRINA is enlarging. Tag for company, sign for conference,trademark and etc. It bings not only the aesthetic feeling but also preventing from fake. |
