Properties: The pure product is a colorless transparent liquid. Relative density: 2.130, melting point 3184.4 , boiling point 1390 . Commercially available solid and liquid caustic soda come in two kinds: the first is pure white solid caustic soda, which comes in flake, lump, granular, rod-like, and crisp; and the second is pure liquid caustic soda, a colorless and transparent liquid.
Industrial available caustic soda contains some impurities, mainly sodium chloride and sodium carbonate, etc., and sometimes a small amount of iron oxide. When dissolved into a concentrated liquid caustic soda, most impurities will float to the top and can be removed. Solid caustic soda has very strong hygroscopicity, soluble in water and dissolves in heat. The solution has a very strong alkaline. It is also soluble in ethanol and glycerol, but insoluble in acetone, ethyl ether, and acetic acid.
